Shin Nichi Ho Newspaper Article

The following is an article by local Japanese newspaper Shin Nichi Ho about Aikido Shinju-kai's 15th anniversary anniversary. The story was originally written in Japanese (click on the picture below to see the larger version) and was translated by one of Aikido Shinju-kai's students, Mr.Tham Wai Yip (CDANS Dojo).

The International Aikido Seminar in Singapore was held on 22 - 23 February as part of the 15th Anniversary of Aikido Shinju-kai Singapore. The event was held in the Pan Pacific Hotel Ballroom where the national flags of 10 countries was put up on the walls. There was a total of 300 participants from all over the world who participated in the 2-day training.

Aikido Shinju-kai, which follows the Aikido style of Japan Aikikai, was set up by Mr. Philip Lee in 1988. After the first dojo was set up in Tampines SAFRA, there are now about 30 dojos set up in places like community centres and private clubs, with over 1000 members. There are also about 60 children from the Japanese Association who are members.

During the seminar, beginners and yudansha alike trained seriously under the instruction of special guest Hiroshi Tada Shihan (9th dan). On the second day, there was an Embukai (demonstration) where representatives from the various countries performed. From Japan, there were students from Taka Juku (Jiyou ga oka; Gessoji, Hokuso Dojo), Aikikai Nara branch (Osaka), Nakanoku (Tokyo) Aiki Federation. In contrast to the dance-like flow of the Japanese representatives, the representatives from Malaysia were like stuntmen showing their fast and violent moves, entertaining the spectators with their unique techniques. The second half of the seminar featured performances by the other foreign visiting shihans. Some of the perfomances were from from Ken Cottier (6th dan, Hong Kong), Kubota (7th dan, Aikikai Nara), Koyama (7th dan, Nakanoku Aikikai Federation, age 78) and the fascinating demonstrations from Tada Shihan (Aikido's highest grade). The whole seminar hall was deeply engrossed in these displays.

During the "International Friendly" dinner reception after the Embukai, there were more performances of Lion Dance, Drum Performance by the local Japanese Cultural Society and a musical cello duet by the seminar participants. The climax of the dinner was the naming ceremony of an orchid. A new orchid breed was named after Tada Shihan as Dendrobium Hiroshi Tada and presented during the ceremony. According to Tada Shihan, Aikido is an art which spreads the peace and harmony of humankind, and is also for the general betterness of the society. Throughout the dinner, one is able to hear the traditional Japanese toast "Kanpai" repeated many many times.
