Aikido Shinju-Kai 12th Anniversary Celebration was carried out successfully during the weekend of the 12th and the 13th of August 2000. Attendance of over 300 participants were recorded, including foreign representatives from Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Zealand.

The anniversary was graced by four foreign shihans namely: Yoshiaki Yokota Shihan (7th dan) from Hombu dojo (who was the guest of honour), Hironobu Yamada Shihan (7th dan) from Hokusou Aikikai, Narita, Ikuhiro Kubota Shihan (7th dan) from Osaka, and Kenneth Cottier Shihan (6th dan) of Hongkong Aikido. Also present was the Shinju-Kai Technical Advisor, Harry Ng Shihan (6th dan).

The event was held at the Fort Canning Lodge - where most of the foreign guests stayed during the weekend - with the training held at the function hall on the 12th, and at Bishan Community Club on the 13th. The seminar saw sessions attended by close to 300 participants, taken by the shihans. The dinner and dance was held in the evening of the 12th of August, from 7:30pm to 2:00 am the next morning, graced by our jolly shihans, who who sportingly hit the dance floor with the rest of us. (Yep, quite a lot of us stayed till the very end including Yokota Sensei!!)

Below we have a little write up by one of our MC's, Trevor Ellis, on the Dinner and Dance:

Yokota Sensei, receiving the momento to the Anniversary, presented by Philip Lee Sensei.
"The evening commenced with a short video show of O'Sensei in action, which was showing while all the 330 guests arrived. Once everyone was seated, a short introduction was made to welcome everyone, especially all the overseas guests. Philip Lee sensei (5th dan) made a welcoming speech on behalf of Aikido Shinju-kai Singapore. He then made a presentation of momento's to the guest of honour Shihan Yokota (7th dan, Hombu dojo), Shihan Kubota (7th dan, Japan), Shihan Yamada (7th dan, Japan), Shihan Ken Cottier (6th dan, UK & Hong Kong), Shihan Harry Ng (6th dan, technical adviser, Singapore) and the delegations from Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia & New Zealand. Momento's were also presented to various members of Aikido Shinju-kai Singapore for their dedication and service.

After all the presentations had been made, a surprise presentation of an engraved plaque was made to Philip Lee Sensei by instructor Kelly Tan on behalf of all the Aikido Shinju-kai instructors & dojo leaders in appreciation of all his teaching & guidance.

During the dinner the guests were entertained by the Gurkha Contingent boys & girls club performing

Ken Cottier Sensei charmed the audience with
'I started Loving You Again'
traditional Nepalese dancing. A magician, Alvin Lim, also entertained everyone by performing various illusions, his final display was to escape from a strait jacket. There was also a short musical item from the singing Shihan Ken Cottier with Kelly Tan accompanying him on guitar.

Several lucky prize draws were made at different intervals during the evening, each of the visiting Shihans were invited up to the stage to draw the tickets and present the prizes to the lucky winners. There were over 80 prizes given away during these draws, these included an overseas trip to Hong Kong, a video camera, a 29 inch TV, hi fi sets, set of Japanese swords and many other wonderful gifts. All the prizes were kindly donated by local companies, organisations and even Aikido Shinju-kai members. After the dinner a gold, diamond & ruby pendent in the design of the Aikido Shinju-kai logo was offered to auction. As the bidding progressed, Matsuda Sensei donated his tie & tie-clip that he was wearing as an additional gift to the highest bidder. The lucky winner was Mr Bob Tan with a bid of $1,000.

After the auction was completed Philip Lee sensei, accompanied by the guest of honour and the other guest Shihans, lead a round of "Yum Seng" around all the tables. Once this was completed there were additional presentations by the various overseas delegations to Phillip Lee Sensei in congratulations on the 12th anniversary celebrations.

Then the disco started playing and the dance-floor became the place to "strut your stuff". At midnight the grand lucky draw took place, the guest of honour, Shihan Yokota was invited up to the stage to draw the tickets and present the prizes. After the final lucky draw the disco started again and the dance-floor was once again filled with people dancing the night away. "
