The Cabin Crew Spirit
The SIA cabin crew is a highly motivated bunch of Aikido enthusiast and many are known to appear in the Dojo right after landing from a flight just to get a good training or go for three consecutive classes in a single day. Everytime they get a new crew member in the dojo, it is their best excuse to go for beer after class to celebrate. Such is the Cabin Crew Spirit :D

When I was first introduced to Aikido, I realized that brute strength and aggression are not the main focus of self-defence. It is about the state of mind, focus and well-being. This is when my interest begins. During my first training, Philip Sensei enlightened us that Aikido is the way of harmony. He explained the philosophy of using your opponents' strength for self-defense, to love our enemies and one another. The practical moves - learning the techniques and rolling on the floor! These simple techniques gave me a great sense of satisfaction.

Why I want to join? It exercises the mind and body in a way that interests me. The art is "non-violent" as it uses minimum force. It does not advocate or practise forceful attacking or blocking of opponents' attacks, facing the opponent head on; instead it harmonizes with the opponents' attacking force and uses it against the opponent himself.
How I felt after the training? Exhilarating and refreshing. I get to experience first hand how the movements and techniques are effective in mobilizing an opponent. Most applicable in aircraft situations.

I was so impressed with the first training session that I went again the very next evening. Our Instructors make learning the art so simple and interesting yet effective. You do not have to use full physical force to feel the aggressor. It takes only several elegant movements like dancing to do the job. Apparently it is an art of self defence and not aggression. I am looking forward to the next training session to sweat it out, learn an art and have good fun.
