Brief Description
In 1998 the Gurkha Contingent reviewed its martial art training program to identify an art to enhance operational capabilities. As Police officers, the principle of using minimum force is fundamental. Aikido, with its emphasis on self-defense was identified as a suitable martial art and thus was formally introduced as a mandatory martial art for the Gurkha Contingent on May 1999.
An initial core group of 70 Gurkha officers were selected from amongst volunteers to undergo training to achieve the proficiency level of a black belt (1st Dan) in about 4½ years (by 2003). They will then be appointed as instructors to conduct Aikido training for the remaining officers in the unit.
With the able leadership and guidance from our Chief instructor Philip Lee Sensei, the Gurkhas have excelled in this martial art. In our first grading on August 1999, 10% of the participants were given double promotion from white belt to blue-gold (5th Kyu).
