| 1. |
Do-gi (worn left side over right)
and belt must be worn and tied properly at all times during
training. If you need to adjust your clothing always face away
from the direction of O'Sensei's photograph. Do-gi must be clean,
in good condition and have Aikido Shinju-kai badge affixed. |
| 2. |
Finger and toe nails must be
kept short. Long hair must be tied back and ladies should clean
away any facial make-up prior to practice. This is to maintain
a high standard of personal hygiene. |
| 3. |
No food and drinks are to be
consumed in the Dojo. Consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited
before training. |
| 4. |
No footwear is allowed on the
training mats. All shoes should be placed in neat rows at designated
areas and pointing outwards. |
| 5. |
Be at the Dojo at least 15 minutes
before class starts. |
| 6. |
All students are to help lay
the interlocking training mats before class starts. After class,
all students are to help store away the interlocking training
mats. At Dojos with permanently laid training mats, all students
are to help sweep and clean the training mats. |
| 7. |
On entering and leaving the
Dojo, a standing bow must be made facing the direction of O'Sensei's
photograph. |
| 8. |
Upon entering and leaving the
training mats, a kneeling bow must be made facing the direction
of O'Sensei's photograph. Place your left hand on the mat in
front of you, then followed by your right hand, forming a triangle
with your 2 thumbs and index fingers meeting at the tips. Bend
forward and bow with your eyes tilting forward. Do not lift
your head up to see and also do not show your neck when bowing. |
| 9. |
You may do your own warm-up exercises
before the class begins. Students are to sit in their lines
about two minutes before class commences. A leader will shout
'Class' when the instructor steps into the Dojo. Remain sitting
in seiza in your rows while waiting for the Instructor to begin
class. |
| 10. |
Sitting arrangement before and
after class is according to the grade of the students, with
the most junior on the left and most senior on the right. Students
must check that they are sitting in a straight line and space
themselves such that the line-up is centred with respect to
O'Sensei's photograph. Instructors, leaders and assistant leaders
are to sit in one row in front of the general class. |
| 11. |
At the start and end of the class,
all will bow towards O'Sensei's photograph upon the command
'Rei' (meaning to bow). Then students will bow to the Instructor,
saying 'O-ne-gae-shi-masu' (meaning please teach or guide)
at the start of the class and 'A-ri-ga-to-go-zai-masu'
(meaning thank you) at the end of the class. |
| 12. |
Enter or leave the Dojo only
when the Instructor is not demonstrating. If you are late, do
not enter the Dojo when the Instructor is explaining or demonstrating
the technique. Remain outside and enter only when the Instructor
is done. If you come in late during the warm-up, go to the front
of the class, do a kneeling bow facing the direction of O'Sensei's
photograph first and raise your hand to the person taking the
warm-up to request for permission to join in. Upon entering,
approach the Instructor of the class and do a kneeling bow before
joining the class for training. Likewise, when leaving early,
ask for permission and bow before leaving the dojo. |
| 13. |
In the Dojo, there are only 2
ways of sitting: seiza or crossed legs. Lying down or sprawling
across the training mats is not allowed. |
| 14. |
At any time when you are sitting
in seiza on the training mats, do not have your back facing
the direction of O'Sensei's photograph. |
| 15. |
During class, before and after
performing any technique or exercise together, students will
bow to each other respectfully and sincerely. |
| 16. |
When performing any techniques,
always allow the seniors to go first. Among the same grade,
it is always polite to gauge by the age of seniority. |
| 17. |
During class, when the Instructor
of the class instructs a pair of students, both students must
do a kneeling bow and be in seiza position to receive the explanation.
If the Instructor is instructing only one student in the pair,
the other should remain in seiza at a safe distance but be ready
to participate. Other students nearby should also sit in seiza
to listen to the instruction. All students should do a kneeling
bow to the Instructor at the end of the instruction. |
| 18. |
Leaders, assistant leaders and
senior students 3rd kyu and above must be alert at all times
to fold any Instructor's hakama after class. Students must be
in seiza while waiting to receive/return the hakama from/to
the Instructor. |
| 19. |
Other students who wish to learn
how to fold the hakama may do so by folding the hakamas of Dan
grade students. Students should stand by the side while waiting
to receive/return the hakama. |
| 20. |
Always acknowledge Sensei, Instructors
and seniors (in the order according to their grades), regardless
if you are in the Dojo or outside, with a simple nod and hands
by the side. |
| 21. |
Students should feel honoured
when Sensei or any other Instructor selects you to be the uke
and should not reject the request. |
| 22. |
Students should refrain from
taking too many breaks or making unnecessary conversation during
training. |
| 23. |
Always practise with a sincere
and humble spirit. |
| 24. |
Enjoy your training and always
have a positive team spirit among yourselves. |
| 25. |
All Aikido techniques are secret
in nature and must not be revealed publicly or taught to anyone
outside the dojo. |
| 26. |
No one is allowed to teach or
organise classes for themselves without the consent of the Chief
Instructor. |
| 27. |
During practice, always obey
your Instructors and follow your instructions. Do not make the
practice session a time for needless test of strength and avoid
rough practice. |
| 28. |
Be serious and alert during
training. Always put forth your full spirit through the use
of your mind and body. |
| 29. |
Always take care of your partners
while practising and executing any techniques. |
| 30. |
Students should not keep training
with the same partner. |
