On Friday evenings, most people cheer the end of a week's toil to the start of a restful weekend. For many individuals, this may mean hitting the malls, cinemas or even partying spots around town. Yet, a unique bunch of people prefer to make the Multi-Purpose Hall at Toa Payoh Community Club (TPCC), located opposite Toa Payoh National Library, their favourite Friday hide-out... all for some real cool action!
Aikido classes at TPCC have been around for more than most people think, ever since the year 2003. The class is led by Shinjukai’s established 4th Dan instructor, Sensei Kelly Tan, whom his students recognize as a warm fatherly figure, in and out of class times.
On the spacious and coolly ventilated, air-conditioned training grounds of TPCC, classes for adults and children are held concurrently. As such, one special feature of TPCC Aikido is that pairs of parent-and-children are seen to attend classes together! As relayed by most parents of the pairs, learning Aikido with their child is not only a constructive activity where both enjoy together, there is family bonding and is also a great way to instill concepts of self-defense on fairly common levels.
The children’s class is led by Dojo Leader Jeremy Heng, and assistant Dojo Leader Chia Shi Min. The adult’s class is led, none other than Sensei Kelly Tan. The TPCC family welcomes any combination of interested learners to find out more!
No worries if the only one available for the session is yourself; we cater to people from all age groups and backgrounds. Students in the adult class range from age 13 to those already their fifties, hence the pace of teaching and learning is well-suited for all belt levels.
In Aikido, it is not the rank that matters most; the Japanese culture emphasizes how students should "teach and guide" by exchanging knowledge with one another.
Join the TPCC Aikido family, classes start at 8pm and ends at 9pm for Children, 9.30pm for Adults! And if you do, then "see you on the mat"! :D
